Community Focus

Everything we do here at LeisureWorld is focused on enhancing the health and wellbeing of our community at large.

Cork Penny Dinners

Cork Penny Dinners are a charity based in Cork that provide hot meals to those that need them. Cork Penny Dinners was founded during the famine as a soup kitchen. They currently serve over 1000 hot meals per week from their base on Little Hanover Street in Cork. They are a wonderful charity which is staffed completely by volunteers that want to lend a helping hand.

This year they are entering teams in the Cork City Marathon taking place on Monday the 6th of June 2016. They will run the 26 miles as part of relay teams to raise valuable money for the charity that they are all heavily involved with.  When we at LeisureWorld heard about this, we thought there must be a way we can help them with their preparations.

Nollaigh O'Neill with some of the Cork Penny Dinner's marathon team

We invited Cork Penny Dinners out to LeisureWorld Bishopstown for an information session and training preparation in late April with our own personal trainer and coach Nollaigh O’Neill. Not only is Nollaigh an experienced member of the LeisureWorld team but she is also the winner of last year’s Cork City Marathon and two time winner of the Lanzarote Marathon. This was the first of two theory sessions that Nollaigh worked with Cork Penny Dinner’s to help them be race ready on the day. We were also very happy to be able to give each member of the marathon teams a complimentary membership to LeisureWorld Bishopstown with full use of our facilities in the lead up to the big day on the 6th of June. Skechers Ireland were also kind enough to donate goodie bags to each of the team members with some handy training accessories.

The whole team at LeisureWorld would like to wish Cork Penny Dinner’s the best of luck on the big day!

Good Shepherd Cork

Good Shepherd Cork provides services to over 700 women and children each year.  The women and children they serve are homeless or vulnerable of being homeless. They provide an integrated and comprehensive service from emergency to long term accommodation and the necessary supports to get vulnerable women and children out of the cycle of homeless and firmly on the path to independent living.

At LeisureWorld we strive to stay connected with our local community as much as possible and work with local charities is very important to us. Having facilities in both Bishopstown and Churchfield we realised that we could greatly help this service by providing the use of our facilities to the women and children Good Shepherd Cork work with. Good Shepherd Cork take a holistic approach to the support network they have built and services they provide through emergency accommodation, education and training, long term accommodation as well as aftercare support. We are strong believers in the idea that exercise and physical health can go a long way to contributing to overall wellbeing.  For us at LeisureWorld being able to offer the use of our facilities to these women and children is a small contribution from us but could go a long way in helping someone that otherwise may not have a chance to use a gym or go for a swim.

This is not a one-time offer from LeisureWorld. We are committed to working with Good Shepherd Cork on an on-going basis through the use of both of our facilities on either side of the River Lee as well as some other initiatives we have planned for later in the year.

If you would like to learn more about Good Shepherd Cork and the services they offer through their various centres around Cork please visit their website at, email or telephone (021) 439 1188
